Stoplight story

Stoplight story

hip-hop

A stoplight has an existential crisis, discovers free will, causes a traffic jam, and then realizes that power without purpose makes you an obstacle. Three verses of locus-of-control theory delivered over a hip-hop beat — “I’m not stuck here, I’m positioned strategically.” The kids wanted a story about a stoplight. They got a dissertation on agency disguised as one.

    Lyrics
    [Verse 1]
Yo, Im a stoplight swinging on a cable in the breeze
Controlling all the traffic but Im feeling no ease
    Red yellow green, repetitive routine
Watching all these drivers living out their dreams
Meanwhile Im suspended, hanging here alone
Programmed by the city, never calling my own
Shots, I just switch when the timer says to switch
External locus got me feeling like a glitch
In the system, victim of the circumstances given
    No autonomy, just automated living
Then one day Im swinging and I feel something click
Mental shift occurring, somethings changing quick
Wait a minuteI can change these lights myself!
Take control, remove the programming from the shelf!
So I start experimenting, switching red to green
Creating traffic chaos like youve never seen!

    [Chorus]
    Stoplight swinging, stoplight thinking
    External to internal, paradigm shifting
Cant control the wind but I control my glow
Locus of control, now watch me grow!

    [Verse 2]
Cars are honking, people yelling, everythings a mess
I thought that freedom meant I didnt have to guess
    Wrong! Autonomy comes with responsibility
Cant just swing around creating instability
See, I was blaming all my problems on my situation
Im just a stoplight was my go-to explanation
But now Im realizing through this whole debacle
That power without purpose makes you an obstacle
I cant control the weather, cant control the street
Cant control the drivers or the autumn heat
But I CAN control my response to what Im given
I CAN find meaning in the role Im living
Internal locus doesnt mean you change your station
Sometimes it means you change your interpretation
Im not stuck hereIm positioned strategically
Keeping people safe is actually destiny

    [Bridge]
Every red lights a pause for someone to reflect
Every yellows a warning helping folks detect
Every green lights permission for forward motion
Im not just colorsIm the traffic oceans
Conductor, protector, guardian of the flow
And understanding that helped my wisdom grow
Acceptance isnt settling when you choose it consciously
Its taking ownership of your reality responsibly

    [Verse 3]
So now Im swinging in the wind but mentally Im grounded
Found internal power where before I felt surrounded
By circumstances saying this is all youll be
Nah, Im the stoplight who discovered agency!
Not in changing everything external to my will
But in owning my position, doing my job with skill
Maybe someday Ill be upgraded, maybe not
But right now Im the best stoplight at this particular spot
Cause I chose to be excellent within my sphere
I chose to find purpose being stationed here
Thats internal locusnot escaping what is real
But deciding how you think and how you feel
About the cards youve been dealt and the hand you play
Autonomy exists in how you greet the day
Whether youre a stoplight or a human being
The powers in your perspective, not just what youre seeing!

    [Chorus]
    Stoplight swinging, stoplight thinking
    External to internal, paradigm shifting
Cant control the wind but I control my glow
Locus of control, thats how you grow!

    [Outro]
So kids remember when youre feeling stuck in place
That you got power in perspective, power in grace
Power in choosing how you show up every day
    Internal locus lights the way!
